The European Commission 2010-2014

Project Description

The client’s communication objectives

Provide a video introduction to the new European Commission for 2010-2014 and the topics the Barroso Commission plans to address during its term.

The main challenges

The client specifically requested that only images be used to depict each of the Commissioners and the five themes. ESN had to find a way to turn the static into dynamic visuals to hold viewer interest.

ESN’s proposed solution

To avoid creating a video that looked like a slide presentation, ESN used 2D motion graphic special effects to turn text into dynamic elements that links the profiles together.

Pictographs were used to introduce and illustrate the five themes.

The process

ESN presented the client with the concept and a story board of the video. Once this was approved, ESN then created draft examples of each section of the video. After corrections and feedback were incorporated, ESN produced the video and delivered it on schedule.

Technical aspects

Clip for the web.

Key features of deliverables
  • The video was created to provide an introduction to the new Commissioners for 2010-2014.
  • ESN created a video clip that can be used for viral marketing campaigns on the web, or for TV and cinema campaigns. For this campaign the audiovisual material must be short, punchy, and be able to create a buzz if it is to be effective on traditional and online media.
Client/audience satisfaction indicators

The video is available on the general website of the European Commission and other European Union websites. The video is also shown at special events and conferences. It was also shown at MIPTV 2010, an annual trade conference for film and TV professionals held in early April in Cannes, France.

The video provides a profile of the new college of European Commissioners for 2010-2014 and the five priority themes they plan to address during their term. It begins with a clip of the group, dissolves into an image of President José Manuel Barroso and his role, before covering the five themes of his Commission. The themes are followed by the outlines of each of the other 26 Commissioners.
