ESN was issued quite a challenge by the European Commission. “We want to sway undecided scientists, undergraduates and older high school students to take up study and careers in information and communications technology,” the Commission’s Future and Emerging Technology (FET) team told us. After consulting our web, audiovisual and graphical departments, we came up with a concept which we called FET House, a place where young people can hang out ‘virtually’ and meet with others who share their passion for technology and science. ESN also put together a team of consultant post-graduates who signed up to FET House as ‘mentors’ – to answer questions put to the forum or directly via the profiles back-end that our web team developed. We shot footage of actors performing tasks in different (imagined) rooms of the ‘House’ and used specialist integrators and sound and visual effects creators to combine this with ESN designs to make a dynamic, ‘living’ place for budding technologists to drop in, meet people and learn something new.
